I found it looking for info on hiking near Tajimi. Jokoji is not what I was looking for, but..... I live in Tokyo but have friends in Nagoya. In fact, I used to live there. And I now remember that I did this trail once many many years ago. Solo. My first hiking experience in Japan. And I also saw a snake. Except you're wrong about poisonous snakes. Well the one you have in the picture is not poisonous. That's an aodaisho, a Japanese rat snake. Surprisingly big and long and green/brown. I actually see them in Tokyo in certain quitter and greener neighborhoods. But there are also mamushi all over Japan, which are poisonous. And that's what I saw in Jokoji on my first hike. I haven't seen any since but I was convinced that Japan was crawling with deadly snakes - haha. The one I saw was shorter with the tell-tale triangular jaw/head shape that is almost always venomous. Sounds like a great hike, and I'm sure you have fond memories of it, even as long ago as it was.
I'm thinking of doing this same hike in August this year with my wife, and I hope you wouldn't mind answering a couple questions. About how long were you hiking every day? Could this hike be done reasonably in 5 days, or would you have to really be pushing the pace hard to make it? Also, did you have maps? I've been trying to find good topo/trail maps to plan out the route, but I just haven't been able to.
I appreciate any advice you can offer, and thanks again for the trip report!
Alexacbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09085456521879866461noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2620514807510403597.post-27390324005599581502014-04-02T17:21:15.863+09:002014-04-02T17:21:15.863+09:00Santa Clause isn't real?! I'm South African and have recently moved to Aichi from Bangkok and it's been a little like moving from New York to the fictional Stars Hollow. I feel a little like I'm in the twilight zone some nights - where are all the people? Anyways, I saw some kids wearing beanies shaped as Pokemon and I too could only pick out Pikachu. Tateyama is a really beautiful mountain.

You will find huts along the way that you can sleep in so you don't have to bring anything other than a backpack with a little food and water, but it's an expensive way to travel. You can either have food included in your stay, or just rent tatami, but either way is quite pricey. When we did the hike we carried all of our stuff: tent, sleeping bags, and food. There are lots of places to find water along the way so that was less of a problem.

You do need to be pretty fit to hike to the top of Tateyama because it's a long walk and it's pretty steep. If you look in Lonely Planet's "Hiking in Japan" they have a section on Tateyama that provides really good information for route planning and estimated travel times.Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12732766041625631376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2620514807510403597.post-49879930132615963052013-05-05T03:32:06.174+09:002013-05-05T03:32:06.174+09:00hello mike!
